Artist Statement:
In the Bible, God declares that humans have dominion over the earth and nature, but that’s inherently not true. No matter how powerful we feel as humans, the force of nature is unstoppable and everlasting.
These compositions include scenes of once well-loved objects and places, like a bedroom and a rusted-out car. My incorporation of intense, three-dimensional plant forms overtakes the works, jumping off the canvas unexpectedly and grabbing viewers’ attention immediately. Once the foreground draws you in, the layered colors and shadows create a rhythm that draws your eyes into every nook and cranny within each piece, searching for context or any sign of recent human activity.
You will find that there is no human presence beyond that which laid the brick pathway and once walked upon it for years; a family no longer inhabits the grand house with a porch made to enjoy the summer nights on. Questions regarding the who’s, what’s, and how’s will begin to creep in. The answers to these questions are up to interpretation, but the common thread is that humans are temporary. What we have done, however, is not, and neither is nature. These works can be seen as both a testament to the accomplishments of humankind as well as to the power of the earth.
We have made things that will far outlast us on this planet, but vines will never cease to creep, and metal will never cease to rust.
