Artist Statement:

Your memories are not real. They existed – you remember them – but they aren’t real.

There are three stages when your brain forms a memory: encoding, storage, and retrieval. Encoding is when you experience or learn something, and your brain transforms it into neural code through working memory; storage is where the memories stay; and retrieval is when your brain brings them back into your working consciousness.

The tricky thing about memory retrieval is that whenever you recall something, it gets rewritten. They’re factually no longer what they used to be.

But your feelings stay the same.

My work analyzes the phenomenon that is memory. From milestones, traditions, once-in-a-lifetime occasions, or seemingly mundane everyday moments, your brain processes things uniquely. Your relationships and values reinforce, rewire, and influence which details are important enough to stay with you – the sound of the waves on a family beach trip, that look on your mother’s face, your partner’s favorite hat – and which are just delightful background noises morphing together into a soundtrack called your life.
